Epik High Remixes the Human Soul

A few days ago hiphop trio Epik High’s electroremix album was released. Remixing the Human Soul features 10 of Epik High’s “greatest hits and near misses”, remixed by a group called Planet Shiver – a name that might ring a bell for those who have Epik High’s fifth album Pieces, Part One, which included a version of One remixed by the same group.
Tablo mentioned on his blog back in June that the songs weren’t just remixes, but total recreations, and that the album was going to sound like it was filled with brand new songs. After hearing the previews they released on their YouTube channel, I was already in agreement.
Having now heard the whole album, I am still in complete agreement.
I am not usually a fan of remixes, and although I’ve enjoyed the remixes Epik High have released in the past I was a little doubtful over whether I’d be able to truly appreciate an entire album’s worth of them. I can definitely appreciate Remixing the Human Soul.
The remixes also have very cleverly recreated names – Fly becomes Fly Higher, Love Love Love becomes Love Love Loveless, Breakdown is Breakdown the Wall, 우산 (Umbrella), becomes 버려진 우산 (Broken Umbrella), 1분 1초 (One Minute One Second), becomes 1분 1초, a Little Memory (One Minute One Second, a Little Memory), Fan is Fanatic, The Future becomes Back to the Future, One is now You Are the One, the second album old-skool style title track High Skool is recreated as High Skool Dropout, and recent hit Map the Soul comes back as Remap the Soul.
My favourite track is definitely Remap the Soul, since it’s so beautiful, but Fanatic was by far the coolest remix from the whole album. It helps that Fan was already a very cool song to begin with!

According to a tweet Tablo made earlier today, Remixing the Human Soul reached #7 on the US iTunes electronic chart. I find that super cool.
Something that I thought was a very smart move this time is that unlike 魂: Map the Soul, which was only available through iTunes and mapthesoul.com (with plenty of troubles for international fans without credit cards), Remixing the Human Soul is available through iTunes, mapthesoul.com, and everywhere else that fans are used to buying their Korean CDs.
Moar sense this time, they have it.
They also have an online-exclusive bonus track that isn’t on the actual album:

전자깡패 (Electric Gangster) features Korean comedian 정형돈 (Jung Hyungdon), and a whole lot of dorks trying very hard to be badass electric gangsters. I am caught between being intimidated, attracted, and just plain amused. Which is exactly how I like my Epik High, thankyou very much.
